I just ordered the controller from Dell Spare Parts. I hope this resolves the problem! Thank you for you help.
Re: Installing Server 2012 on PowerEdge T110 II in Raid Mode
Re: Booting ESXi 5.1 from Internal Dual SD Module fails
1. yes, it is supported, and I was able to get this to work today on our T420, very straight forward install.
2. I have not been able to find where the version of the SD card controller is stated, still checking on this
3. have you contacted support to see if they will swap your unit out for you?
Also, could you try using just one card instead of 2, and in the bios, integrated devices, turn off the mirror mode.
Re: Booting ESXi 5.1 from Internal Dual SD Module fails
1. Thanks for checking; I figured that it was but since I've not been successful I thought I'd ask.
2. OK; it would be nice to know for sure.
3. I haven't contacted support yet. I need to find a time during normal hours when I can be near the machine in case they want me to do something. It seems like a bad drive is the most logical explanation at this point.
I tried again tonight with only one card and the mirroring turned off and got the same results (Buffer too small error loading /user.b00).
R410 - BROADCOM NIC can run VLAN tagged under Linux?
Hi,
I have R410 with Broadcom NetXtreme II (BCM5716) running bnx2 driver under CentOS 6.1. Although I can config it with vlan interface. However, when I connect it with Dell 3448. It looks only support untagged frame. I would like to know can this NIC config with vlan tagged?
Thanks!
What is DELL OS install conception?
Hi,
I came from an IBM world where I already know server conceptions, OS install rituals, I am new in DELL servers.
Please let me know what is the conecptional idea at DELL for installing OS on servers? Do we have preinstallation kits, Windows deployment tools, what are the names of these packages and what are the latest versions of these packages?
At IBM we have UpdateXpress package for fimrware and driver upgrades, is it called "OpenManage Server Update Utility" here?
At IBM we used ServerGuide package to deploy Windows Server OS, what do we use for deploymet here at DELL?
I have a PowerEdge T310 server and I'd like to install Windows 2008 R2 on it, as DELL imagined it. Where should I start? Is there a step by step guide to download deployment tools and install OS?
I am a bit confused, what are these DELL packages:
"Dell Systems Management Tools and Documentation"
"Dell Windows OS install support pack"
"Dell Systems Build and Update Utility"
"OpenManage Server Update Utility"
Re: R410 - BROADCOM NIC can run VLAN tagged under Linux?
Hi there,
Thanks for your inquiry. I don't believe what you are trying to do is impossible. Here are some references including third-party references:
* www.dell.com/.../howto_config_private_vlans.pdf
* access.redhat.com/.../s2-networkscripts-interfaces_802.1q-vlan-tagging.html
* www.tummy.com/.../jafo_20061130_063931
Do you mind pasting your /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-* for each interface as well as the module and firmware version from ethtool -i from one of the bnx2 interfaces on the CentOS host as well as "show running config" from your switch and we can try to get this sorted out? Thanks!
Re: R410 - BROADCOM NIC can run VLAN tagged under Linux?
Hello,
Thanks for information. Actually I am using R410 with Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5716 NIC and running under CentOS 6.3.
Following is those ifcfg file for reference. How can I trace it is sending untagged or tagged frames?
The ethtool -i cannot function it, so how can I easily to those modules and firmware?

Re: What is DELL OS install conception?
"Dell Systems Management Tools and Documentation (SMTD)"
This is the all-encompassing DVD, containing SBUU, OMSA, diagnostics, etc. ... AND the contents of the "OS Install Support Pack".
"Dell Windows OS install support pack"
This is a support/driver pack to augment SBUU when installing Servers 2008 or later. It is built into SMTD, so is only necessary when used with the standalone SBUU. It is not needed for Server 2003, as SBUU contains all that is needed.
"Dell Systems Build and Update Utility (SBUU)"
This is the installation and update utility. Booting to this utility gives you the choice of installing a [supported] OS or updating system firmware (together with SUU as the actual repository for updates). This installation utility installs all needed drivers during the install, and creates the Utility Partition (diagnostics accessed by F10 during POST).
"OpenManage Server Update Utility (SUU)"
This utility contains firmware and driver packages for all systems supported by the utility (pretty much generations 9-12), and can be used as the repository with SBUU or run directly from inside Windows. It is not bootable.
Re: What is DELL OS install conception?
Ok. This is clear now. Thank you!
Can you please tell me if these utils are different for every server model or are they global? (I assume that there is no different SMTD package for specific server models.)
If I'd like to get the latest SMTD, what is the easies way? Support search gives tons of versions. I assume that the latest veriosn of SMTD now is: 6.5.1 A00
Re: What is DELL OS install conception?
SMTD/SBUU and SUU are "pretty" universal. The latest versions (7.2 is the latest) will pretty much work on any server model since 2006 (9th generation through 12). The downloads are quite large, and this is why. 6.5 should work ok, but 7.2 will have the latest drivers for your devices.
For what it's worth, I seldom use the installation utility and install directly from the OS media.
Hint: Never use Dell's "search" ... it's pretty useless.
Easiest way to find your downloads is to go to support.dell.com, Drivers and Downloads, and choose your server model (entering your Service Tag is supposed to return download specific to your ordered configuration, but it is pretty hit/miss right now, as the Support site is undergoing some upgrades/repairs). (SMTD is under Secure Systems Management.)
Also, I didn't mention OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) ... this is the application installed in the OS to monitor and manage the hardware and is recommended on every install, where possible.
Re: Installing Server 2012 on PowerEdge T110 II in Raid Mode
I am running into the same problem. I don't know why Dell is making new servers with old components that can not handle the latest server OS, especially when they have a newer component that will work (PERC S110). Perhaps they have a lot of older boards on their shelves that they are trying to get rid of.
Anyway, I found in another thread that someone used the PERC S100 driver for Server 2008 and it worked for them. I just tried it out and it is installing, but I'm not sure if the old driver will cause problems with Server 2012 later on down the road of if Dell developers were too busy to test out and certify the old driver with the new OS. It may be worth it to give it a try, do a search for the following: DELL_MULTI-DEVICE_A05_R294489.exe
Re: Installing Server 2012 on PowerEdge T110 II in Raid Mode
I completely agree with you and was disappointed as such! Especially since I didn't see any reference to this limitation unless I had picked an operating system first (which I didn't since I was configuring the computer without a preinstalled OS). I was actually trying to install OS 2003 initially and it didn't install and I can understand that since it is pretty old! I can't expect them to support that old of an OS even though it would be nice to be backward compatible! I was forced to buy another OS and I decided I might as well buy the latest (2012) only to find out that it is not supported unless you buy the H200 hardware controller which I have ordered since again! I am not happy to have wasted a couple of weeks trying to figure this out and paying for extra components and software after fact. Had I known these limitations upfront, I could have made a better decision and not waste so much time and be delayed this much! But, too late for that. I will be happy when it's all over and I can actually use the server that has so far been a nice and expensive paper weight!
Re: Installing Server 2012 on PowerEdge T110 II in Raid Mode
The T110 II is almost two years old, so yes, compared to the 12G systems, it is using older hardware (I suspect the T110 II's replacement is due out soon). The S100/S110 is a special implementation of Intel's onboard RAID, so the S110 is not an option on the older boards that have the S100.
ftp.dell.com/.../DELL_MULTI-DEVICE_A05_R294489.exe
Good luck.
Re: Installing Server 2012 on PowerEdge T110 II in Raid Mode
XDeus, additionally, are you installing OS 2012 with server 2008 drivers in RAID mode? I tried installing OS 2012 in nonRAID mode and it works that way, but that was not what I want to ultimately do. I definitely want to configure the dual drive in Raid 1 mode to have extra protection against a possible hard drive failure and why I ended up buying the H200 hardware controller. Thanks for the reference and reply.
Re: R410 - BROADCOM NIC can run VLAN tagged under Linux?
Thanks, I am looking into this.
Re: Trouble with pre-installed Windows 2012 on T110 II
For reference to anyone else who runs into this. I waited almost 2 hours, then hard booted and it came up to a login. Go figure.
Re: Installing Server 2012 on PowerEdge T110 II in Raid Mode
Yes, I installed Server 2012 with the 2008 driver in RAID mode. Everything is working great so far. I didn't want to install in non-RAID mode because I was in the same boat as you and ordered two drives for RAID 1. Use the link that theflash1932 posted for the S100 2008 driver.
Re: R410 - BROADCOM NIC can run VLAN tagged under Linux?
Hi there, from the looks of it your NIC configuration is OK and it's possible there is a problem with the trunking settings. Can you confirm whether or not the 802.1q header is in fact being correctly inserted into packets leaving the VLAN interface? You can do this on the CentOS host itself by running:
# tcpdump -n -e -i em1 src 41.52.136.195
and while that is running please try to ping another address from the CentOS host which that has a route out of the VLAN interface -- I don't know what your routes are but the gateway or DNS server addresses may be good candidates. Whether or not the switch or ping targets are correctly configured, tcpdump will show the CentOS host doing an ARP request for the destination address and that will include the VLAN tag as indicated by "ethertype 802.1Q (0x8100), length xxx, vlan 300". This will let us know whether we should be looking at the host config or switch config, or possibly both. Let me know what the outcome is. Thanks!
[edited: specified incorrect interface in example command]
Re: Windows Server 2012 on PowerEdge 2800
You could install vmware's ESX 3.5, it's free and then you can install 2012 or any OS on top of that. Then you would only need to worry about drivers for the VM and not for the 2800.
Re: Windows Server 2012 on PowerEdge 2800
While you can run 3.5 on a 2800, the 2800's processors do not support VT, so 64-bit VM's (2008R2, 2012) are not possible.
